Sera
   Sera at TAILS
Hello:
We are coming up on the first anniversary of our adoption of Sera, a sixty-five pound black Standard Poodle/Labrador Retriever cross. She was around four and one half when we took her home.

She has been an absolute delight. We were concerned the first week when she seemed not to ever bark. We thought the trauma of the adoption as an older dog had been too much. But by the end of the week, she made her first little "Woof" out the bedroom window one night. Since then, she has been better than the doorbell or the driveway sensor.

Everyone she meets is her new best friend forever. She does grumble that she is not permitted to chase at will all the squirrles, bunnies, geese, robins and other critters we meet on our walks, but as long as she gets to come with us everywhere and get long walks by the Kishwaukee River, it's all good.

Thank you to everyone at Tails for putting Sera together with us.She has enriched our lives.

Mike

Happy Mike in his new yard---Go, Mike, Go!

Just thought I would send a few pics of Mike and how happy he is.  He is a great dog and we are so happy to have found him.

Thank you for all of your help on Saturday.

(posted 8-31-10)

Lane's note: Mike was brought to TAILS in May as a stray found in DeKalb. He's a 2-year old American Pit Bull Terrier mix and a big guy. TAILS knew he had lots of love to give. Energetic Mike waited and waited but people passed him by because of his breed. Mike grew anxious and tired of living at TAILS even though staff and volunteers spent quality time with him. Nothing is like the joy of a Forever Home for a pet. We're so glad that Mike's family adopted him on August 28. We're thrilled for you and Mike. You touched many people while you were here. Happy TAILS to Mike & Family!

Artie & Teddy

Artie (grey)                              Teddy (fluffy)

We are Artie (grey) and Teddy (fluffy). We came from the not so nice shelter that TAILS rescued so many animals from. We went into foster care because of chronic upper respiratory infection. This means we are always snuffly and sometimes snotty. TAILS could not take us for adoption unless we cleared the infection. This was something we could not do. Our foster mom could not let us be euthanized, so she adopted us.

It was only after adopting us, that our true story came out. I, Artie, spent my whole life at the not so nice shelter...all nine years! Today, I am learning that sleeping in the sun is an amazing way to spend the day. When I find my favorite toy, I announce it to the world with kitty meows that fill the house. It took awhile, but I think I will stay here and learn what being a cat is all about.

I, Teddy, was a little luckier, spending "only" three years there. I was covered in mats that mom cut out, ever so slowly. As you can see, I am now an amazing Maine Coon with enough fluff for four cats! I have discovered that the bed is a perfect lounging spot, and mom will come and nap with me when she gets a chance.

We share the house with 3 other cats (mom says, "Never thought I would have FIVE cats") and we want everybody to look at the new cat program and give some of those guys a chance. Some of them lived with us at the not so nice shelter and deserve to find the life that we now have. Yes, we are still snotty, and maybe always will be, but mom thinks we are some of the nicest kitties you could ever meet. What is a little nasal discharge among friends?

Sometimes, the less than perfect pets, make the Perfect Pet!

Addendum:

Left, Teddy's 1st time on the bed!

Artie was a bit confused at first, but mostly because I think he is mostly deaf and perhaps has some depth perception problems. He chased my 14 year old Esme at first, but has since given up (mostly) on that. She has learned to run away!

Within 30 minutes, Teddy discovered the bed and has loved it ever since. I attached a photo that I took when he first found it.

I did foster them for over two months before adopting in a separate room, but other than some initial shyness, they have been very friendly. I think they were just so grateful to be in a better place that they have really had a chance to show who they are. Teddy (used to be Scooter)  was very patient with all his mats. They were all over and about 1/2 inch thick. Poor boy looked nothing like he does today, at least on his body. Head was the same, but he had fur about 1/4 inch when the mats came off.

Today, Artie RAN up the stairs, something he has not done before. Who knows if he ever did stairs before living here. Spends the whole day out in the sun when he can. Hopefully it will dry up some of the snot.

I hope that people realize the special kitties can be just as nice as the purrfect kitties.

Moxie

Hey just wanted to let our friends at Tails know that Wednesday we adopted peppy and she is doing great. Her new name *Moxie* and we love her to pieces and she is already a part of the family.
She loves living on a farm, so much room to run around and so many things to see. I can see why you guys fell in love with her she loves to cuddle and be held like a baby.

We thank you guys so much for allowing us the opportunity to bring her home!

Thanks

Molly

My 14+ year old Rottweiler mix died on July 21 and I really did not think I would adopt another dog.  He was a huge part of our family and I don't mean just his 100+ pound size.  His personality was unlike any dog I have ever been around.  I cannnot say in all honesty that he was a well-behaved dog as my house bears the scars of his younger years.  He ate 5 pounds of flour along with 3 pounds of butter during one Christmas cookie baking fiasco!  Walls, window screens, patio doors, nothing was safe from Bud.  He was a big lug and many friends and family urged us to "get rid of that dog" when he was younger.  But we loved him and when he died he left a huge hole in our lives.  My youngest daughter is in school in England and was so very sad the day Bud died.  She said her homcoming in September will be bittersweet as Bud will not be here to greet her.  Anyway, I really did not think I would adopt another dog as it is so hard to say "good-bye" at the end of their lives.

But as I said, Bud left a huge hole in our lives.  The house was so very quiet after he died and I felt depressed and sad.  I looked at animal shelter websites but because I work full time and am a part time student, I really felt I was not home enough to bring another dog into my life.  One of my daughters still lives at home but she also works so any dog would be home alone for several hours of the day.  I thought about a cat but, unfortunately, my youngest daughter is highly allergic and could never be home again.

So, I just looked at pictures of dogs and then one Friday night decided to visit Tails for a little fur therapy.  I joined a couple of young women who were in the meet and greet room with a large black lab.  He was 8 years old and weighed 98 pounds.  It felt good to pet a pup again.  I walked around Tails and looked into cages and rooms but left still thinking a dog just would not fit into my life again.

I went back a week later and met Molly.  She is a 7+ year old Australian Cattle Dog/Beagle mix.  We spent alot of time in the meet and greet room and played with a tennis ball.  She cuddled up next to me when she finished playing and I was able to have quality fur therapy.  I had also met two other very nice dogs that night but Molly's energy level seemed made to order for me.  I left without her but before I got home that night decided to visit with her again on Saturday.  I hoped no one would adopt her before then.  I kept checking Tails' website for her picture.

I asked my oldest daughter to come with me to meet Molly and, perhaps, the other two dogs I had met previously.  Verna brought Molly out first and the three of us spent a good amount of time visiting.  Needless to say, I fell in love with Molly and adopted her one week ago today.  This first week of getting to know one another has been WONDERFUL!  Molly is such a wonderful dog.  While she was listed as a member of the "Red Collar Society" she is a very young member of that group.  We have a 2+ mile route we walk twice a day and we must walk fast or the mosquitoes swarm us!  She loves to play with a tennis ball and is a master tug-of-war player.  She has also been enjoying a slow and quiet walk late at night.  She sniffs about while I watch the stars.

She is gentle and quiet and everyone that has met her loves her!  I must admit people would shy away from me when I walked my dear Bud as he had few social skills, but Molly invites "Good Mornings" and smiles from my neighbors.  The only thing she seems to really dislike is the vacuum cleaner and for that she runs upstairs and sits on the landing until we are finished.

Well, I just wanted everyone one to know that Molly has had a really good first week with my family.  I want to thank all of you for helping me find the perfect companion.  She can't replace Bud but she has already become a very special member of this family.  Thanks again for all that you do at Tails!  By the way our vet has given Molly a clean bill of health and laughed when he came out to meet her.  She was alseep on the floor of the waiting room.  After 14 years he had grown used to Bud's antics and found me with a quiet dog to be quite amusing!

Thank-you, Tails, for helping me find Molly!

Hannah

I had 3 cats-- 2 female and 1 male--and was looking for another male when I found Hannah on the TAILS website. Her owner had gone into a nursing home and 7 year old Hannah was looking for a new home. Her description said she was not adjusting well to life in a shelter. I went to see her. She was tiny, about one quarter the size of my big male Cocoa. The evening I brought her home all 3 cats were curious about her. She was not interested in meeting a bunch of strangers and went under a bookcase to hide.

I coaxed her out from under the bookcase and put her in a spare bedroom upstairs for the night. She decided this was her space and spent two weeks under the bed. She did come out to eat and use the litterbox. When I went upstairs to visit with her, she would come out while I was in the room but the minute I left was back under the bed. Finally, after two weeks she came downstairs on her own and decided to take over the house.

She spent her first afternoon downstairs growling at the other cats, chewing up Cocoa's favorite catnip toy and taking a nap on Emmaline's favorite corner of the couch. Now, after almost 7 weeks, she doesn't growl as much (except at Cocoa, who is afraid of her), has learned not to mess with Emmaline, and spends time with Betty who likes everybody. Also in her first 4 weeks Hannah went from 6.9 pounds to 7.5 pounds and is still eating very well. She spends time upstairs when she wants and downstairs when she wants. With me she is loving and very talkative. But I'm still looking for another male cat--or maybe two.

I wanted to tell you about my new life.

Mom says we had a challenging adjustment period, but ever since we made our deal (she promises not to put me in the crate when she goes to work, and I promise to be a very good girl), life has been great.  Although I still don't like the vacuum or the dishwasher, I have learned to peacefully co-exist with them.

After graduating beginner and intermediate obedience classes, Mom says that I have gained confidence and come out of my shell (I thought only turtles had shells).  Mom takes me for 2 walks everyday.  Inititally, I was very timid and unsure of just about everything we encountered outside, but it only took me about a week to realize how great walks are.  Now I am excited everytime I see Mom pick up the leash.

Mom says I now think I am the neighborhood welcoming committee, as I want to greet everyone we see on every walk.  What can I say ... I love people!  I am still a little uncertain of dogs that I don't know, but I come around to them after a few introductions.  I have made good friends with another Boston Terrier in the neighborhood, Ellie. I even try to get Ellie to play with me, but she is not interested.  Can you imagine ... a dog who doesn't want to play???

Toys are now an important part of my life, and luckily mom and grandma like to give them to me.  Although I still occassionally try to play with something that mom says in inappropriate (her shoes are a particular favorite), Mom tells me to drop it, which I do.  Then Mom redirects me to one of my toys, and we play and play and play.

Mom tells me everyday what a good dog I am.  She says that she is thankful that Tails rescued me and that she adopted me.  This life of regular meals, toys, walks, and love is just awesome.  I wish every homeless dog could have the same happy ending that I found. Thanks you Tails, for giving me the opportunity to find my happy ending.

Leroy

I just wanted to share my tale with you guys. I adopted Leroy, a 6 year old beagle, on April 16th of this year. This has by far been the best decision I have ever made!

I was volunteering at TAILS when I first met him and I was told he had been there for months and was previously adopted out but the household had kids and they wound up returning him. He stayed at the shelter as long as I had volunteered there. I took him on extra long walks and I knew that he was my doggy soul mate and he belonged at home with me and my family. I talked with my fiancee and my mother, we came in to visit him and we made the decision to adopt. Like I had expected, when he arrived at my home he fit in perfectly with my 2 cats and one other dog (Buddy, a 9 year old golden retriever). Everyday I am very grateful that he is here with us and we love him very much! we would have never had him if it werent for TAILS and all the great things you guys do on a daily basis.

I have enclosed a couple pictures of Leroy...
Thanks so much,

Bruce, The Mayor

My boyfriend Adam and I, adopted Bruce in March after our first kitty, Camey passed away from FIP.  We weren't even looking for a new cat, we were just visiting Tails to help with our heartbreak, as Camey passed away only a month and a half after we got her.

Bruce and his litter were brand new that day we came, and they were all in a cage right in front of the door.  Adam was immediately taken by how cute he was with his big green eyes and his tiger stripes.  (His original name was Sparkey) I was hesitant to even look closer at him because I was so devistated over our loss that I didn't want to get my heart into another cat so soon.  But, Adam has a great sense of cats, and knew that Bruce would be coming home with us.

We got Bruce out of the cage and immediately he marked us with his scent and started purring.   He was SO sweet and cute, I of course gave in, and we decided to take Bruce home.   We were even lucky enough to meet the foster mom that day, and were able to calm our nerves about sicknesses right away.  She was so helpful, as well as the lady at the front desk, to let us know Bruce was healthy, and wasn't going to pass away on us.  Sounds silly, but we were scared!

Bruce just celebrated his one year birthday (July 23rd), and is so healthy and happy and such a JOY in our house.   We love him so much and I am so glad he found us that day.  We spoil him so much, he knows all he has to do is look at us with his big eyes and our hearts melt.  I can't imagine our life without him.

And as a side note, we of course renamed Sparkey, Bruce, but his full name (thanks to my silly boyfriend) is:   Bruce Mayor Bee Sault, Esquire III.   We call him the Mayor, mostly.   :)

Dr. Oppenheimer

When we (my boyfriend Mat and I) came into Tails, we weren't planning on adopting an animal. Mainly because Mat is allergic to cats, but I hoped that by forcing him to play with and check out all the cats his heart would melt and he would forget his allergies. Things didn't look very promising until we went to Ajax's condo.

Immediately he started to purr and rub against are hands and fingers through the cage door. His little lion like face had me hooked. To my surprise Mat seemed to be just as interested, so we asked to play with Ajax outside his condo. The minute I sat on the flloor he ran up to be begging for attention. I was given licks, head butts, and plenty of purrs.

One thing we noticed was that he was a drooler.(later we found out the drool was because he needed 5 teeth removed) When we told Tails we were interested we found out Ajax had FIV. We both had never heard of it before, and after being told what the disease is and how it works and how to care for him, we just wanted Ajax more. How could we let this perfect cat sit at Tails just because he has FIV? We had to wait a few days because Ajax needed teeth removed, leaving only one little fang for his front teeth.

After bringing him home I never regretted the decision. We renamed Ajax Dr. Oppenheimer (Mat's idea, he's a chemistry major) I'm a relatively needy and affectionate person, and this cat seemed to be made for me. Not a day goes by that I don't spend with him sleeping on my chest, grooming my face and hair, getting head butted, or cuddled by this amazing cat. As for Mat, his allergies have been almost non existent! Partly because we give The Doctor (his nickname) a weekly bath which he tolerates pretty well, and partly because we groom him so frequently. Nowadays he spends his time being spoiled by the both of us and getting all the cuddling he demands.

Buddy

Good afternoon

We spoke early this evening about my adoption of of Buddy the red nose pitbull from Tails in April of 2009.  Buddy has been a fantastic addition to our family. I tell everyone is 75 pounds of pitbull love!  I have an 8 year old and a 2 year old and Buddy has been nothing but fabulous with both girls, my cat Naldo (who we adopted from Tails in January 09) and my 12 year old pitbull.  I remember adopting him and was told that most people would just walk right by him because of his breed.  How unfortunate because he is the most gentle dog I have every known in my life time.  His previous owner had to give him up because of breed bans in the military, but he and I remain in contact and I send him pictures and videos of Buddy often.

I have attached two pictures with Buddy and the girls.

Hessian, Guinness, & Rikku

In the past few months, I adopted 3 little treasures from TAILS.
First there was Soie (now known as Hessian).
Then Tucker (who's now Guinness)
And lastly a dove, Rikku.

Despite the difference in species, they all get along great with one another!

Hessian loves to chase our 2 other cats, while Guinness is the best of friends with my other dog. Rikku's hubby fell head over heals when I introduced her to him and 2 weeks later hatched their first offspring.

Everyone is happy and healthy. Thank you TAILS!

Xena

Hi!
Xena is doing great and has really flourished over the past two weeks. She has learned all her basic commands and has even become better with fetch. She has a ton of energy and goes on runs daily. My fiance and I have fallen head over heals for her and couldnt have hoped for a better addition to our family. Xena is still getting over some seperation anxiety problems but we were able to get a crate and she seems to be adjusting even better.

Thank you!

Lizzie

Above, Lizzie, then Lady, at TAILS before her adoption

Above, Lizzie at home after being groomed.

My name while I was at Tails was Lady.  I am a little white highland terrier 8 year old dog.

Now, my name is Lizzie.  I have three new friends....Annie, Charlie, and Tubby.

I am calm, gentle, affectionate, housebroken, and extremely loving!!!!!

Annie took me to my vet who checked me over, I now have the correct medication for my dry eye problem, which we realize will be with me always....I am feeling so much better! The vet also now calls me "spoiled"!!!! yes, ! am becoming extremely spoiled (and rightfully  so) as I deserve to be treated with love and respect.

Charlie, my new brother is also a Westie - and he shares almost everything (except HIS toys and dish)....Tubby is a playful kitty...and plays run and search with me .

Annie told me to tell you how happy we ALL are that Tails took me in - and allowed her to have the joy of my company (including lottsa doggie kisses.

ps. Annie had to type this to you, as I dont know how as yet.

Cisco

Hello, my wife and I adopted Cisco December 2009.  We were told that he had been adopted and returned a couple times... and that he did not know commands and of course he had inside potty issues.  Well we are pleased to report that Cisco is doing great!

After a long weekend and about a jar of treats he learned the sit command. He answered to his name within a few weeks. He even comes when he is called (well when he feels like it anyway). As far as the inside potty buiness goes, he is doing well... he would rather go inside the house when the weather is bad, but he meets us half way on the issue by lifting his leg on the toliet!!! Lol.  I'd say he "almost" has it figured out. I suggested we leave the seat up and buy him a step stool, my wife on the other hand suggested we get him a rain coat lol.

He has a very good life now, he has a table by the window he stands to keep tabs on the neighbor dogs, a new micro fiber sofa with a blanket and pillow he calls his own.  A sliding glass door that is full of sun in the morning where he works on his tan, and a queen sized bed that he let's us sleep on with him lol.  He set his own bed time at 8:30 pm whether we are ready or not he goes to bed.  He also has an entire family that loves him and we hope that some how he knows that he is not going anywhere this time and that he has finally found his forever home with us.

Thank you Tails, the Brights

Boots & Nermal
I wanted to share an update on the lives of two of the cats who were adopted through TAILS when TAILS was still nothing more than a few cats in a little farmhouse, and the shelter was still a goal we all worked hard for.

Boots and Nermal came to me as Fosters when our home seemed like we were the goopey eyed foster kitten capital of the world. We couldn't part with them and gave them a forever home.

About a year after we adopted them we moved to the armpit of nowhere Texas where animal rights simply don't exist, got a stray? Call the local police, they will tell you to shoot it. Which in most of the rest of the country you can be arrested for. There was nothing there so I began to rescue myself.

Fast forward to now, five years later, we are moving cross country again. Hubby and cats are going by car, I will follow later as my health no longer affords me the ability to handle such things.. car breaks now, five days before move, no way to save it, and no way to get  Hubby there, let alone the cats. It was a day of panic for us, he had already quit his job in Shreveport LA and began his new job that next Monday. We called every available way to get him and the cats there together but it just wasn't possible. We got him a train ticket then set about the task of finding a way there for the cats, it didn't look good. Heart broken and scared for these two little girls who had become such a huge part of our lives we searched, there had to be a way to get them there..After a week of praying and phone calls we put together a plan, a foster home while we found transport. The night before Mark left (I already had) we found a lady who was driving all the way from East Texas to PA within two hours of our new home, (did I happen to mention there was no home for us either until the day before he left? The house we thought we had fell through and left us scrambling for a home in an area that didn't allow pets in rentals, but thank heaven we found one) Mark got a rental car and picked them up the very same day he got there...Moral of this story..THERE IS ALWAYS A WAY.

Thank you TAILS for bringing those special girls into our life and for sparking a passion for animals and rescue that gave me the ability to not give up on our family.

Tilly

This note is from Tilly (a.k.a. Midnight). I just love it in my forever home. I have a big brother named Riley. He is a little bigger than me and is all white with polka dots all over him. Most of the time we play together very nicely. We do everything together. He showed me how to jump on the bed and what toys are and that it is ok to chew on toys and play "keep away" with them. We also like to cuddle together. When it is not raining we take walks with the big guy.

I had my first visit with the vet at Bethany Animal Hospital. I was scared but I did really good. She also checked out my tick problem and said I was doing fine. I had a shot (I was brave) and I have another appointment in 3 weeks. I gained 2 pounds at my new forever home.

The big guy and the mama just realized yesterday that they didn't take any pictures of me yet. They said that's life when you are the 4th baby (doggie). They will take some very soon.

When my people are both gone I go in the crate. I don't like it but my big brother Riley lays by my crate to keep me company. Everybody I meet pets me a lot and they say I'm pretty and so very sweet and a social butterfly. I don't know what that means 'cause I don't have any wings!

Big Hug to all of you at Tails from Tilly and ESPECIALLY from Bob and Laurie.

Bella
Hello from Bella and Brandie

I recently adopted Bella from Tails and I'm writing this love story to let everyone know its the simple things in life that truly make a difference.

I walked into Tails that day and played with several kitties and had been wanting a cat for several years but I hadn't found MY kitty yet, there were always nice kitties at tails but just not MY cat. I entered the kitty kondo room and read a tag on one of the cages. I love the little bios that Tails uses for their animals. I giggled when I read that if I wanted eye candy for my house this was the cat for me. I opened the cage to see what kind of beautiful cat they were talking about and as I did so this gorgeous siamese mix crawled right up on to my shoulder and I  was lost...I knew that she was mine or if you asked Bella I was hers.

I took my beautiful girl home. The bio said she didn't like toys much....tell that to her toy mouse. Bella loves to be held and petted. She's my little diva but an absolute joy. When I open the door she's there to great me with her almost raccoon like purr, which makes me laugh every time. She always lounges near me when I'm home...of course on the warmest fuzziest blanket she can find. She loves to gaze out the window and really loves to sit on the sink while I get ready in the morning. She likes to be talked to and of course loves talking back... she is part siamese. For such a beautiful creature she is not very graceful but when she flops on the floor and stretches out while telling me all about her day in her unique meow I think to myself how could anyone get rid of this adorable kitty, but I'm glad they did. I like to think that she was waiting for me to find her. My Bella is over 7 years old with good years ahead of her. I hope that after reading this people realize the joy of having an older cat (kittens go fast but the older kitties need a forever home too). Bella has such a distinct personality that just lights up my day, so to Tails and all the people that made it possible to find such a great kitty and friend...Bella and I thank you!

Seamus

Hi! Just wanted to give you an update on Harry, (now called Seamus) who we adopted on May 7.

He has quickly become the favorite playmate of his older sister, Sheila (our border collie mix). Their energy level is comparable and they're a blast to watch play together. He is also very respectful to the queen of the house, Abby (our pointer mix).

He has learned sit, stay, come & fetch and responds well to a whistle. He is a bright boy with lots of energy & everyone in the family adores him (he's spoiled rotten!). We have started obedience classes and he is to be my poster boy for adopting shelter pets.

Thanks for doing such a great job at Tails!

Joey
Hi,
Here's Joey enjoying a lazy afternoon. He was adopted last Monday (6/7). So far he has done so remarkably well with his new home. He spent 4 days in Minocqua at the lake and even saw some deer he wanted to chase. He is a pro at riding in the car, sleeping in his crate and being a really good buddy already.

Thanks for helping us find Joey.

We put our dog Lucy down on the Thursday before Memorial Day weekend.  Our dog Lilly was instantly depressed and we were on a quest to find another dog.  Ok, I was more than Patrick.  Two shelters and 6 dogs later, we came to TAILS.  We set our eyes on Hailey and just had to have her in our life.  You guys were SO great and stayed late on Memorial Day so we could take her home with us that night.  THANK YOU.  We named her on the way home - PoJai "Dear Little Amber" in Chinese.

She's always busy and we were worried about how our 10yr old Lilly would react to such an energetic dog.  But, she more than tolerates her.   We really think she loves her.

We've told our friends and family about our experience at TAILS and if we're in the market again, we'll definitely be back.

Thanks again,
Patrick and Colleen Lang

Cocoa

When my last cat, Clem, died at 18 years and 2 months  I didn’t intend to get any more cats. But after a few months I decided to adopt some. I wanted older cats, between 6 and 12. I found several I liked on the TAILS website and went to look at them. When I was talking to one all of a sudden a large buff and white head popped out of a nearby cat tower. The buff cat started to come out by me but was intimidated by the cat I was talking to and a little afraid of some other people in the room so he went back in his tower.

This was a cat I didn’t remember from the web site. I meant to ask about him, but got involved with Betty and Emmaline, the cats I adopted, and forgot to ask. I thought of him again half way home and checked the TAILS site the next day. His name was Cocoa and he had been at TAILS less than a week. He was younger than I wanted at 4 years old but I kept thinking about him. I decided to go back and look at him once the two I brought home got acclimated.

One day almost three weeks later, Cocoa disappeared from the web site. I figured he had been adopted and was glad of that, but also sad that I hadn’t got back to see him. Then he was back on the web site. I drove to DeKalb  to look at him. He had been adopted, but it didn’t work out and he was returned. He still seemed intimidated by the same cat but came when I called him and seemed to like me. I didn’t give him a third chance to get away and brought him home.

I hoped he would be a playmate for Betty because she really is active. After a couple weeks of growling and spitting they’re at the stage where they tolerate each other but aren’t really friends. Maybe they’ll never play together, but every time Cocoa looks at me and purrs I’m glad I went back for him.

Lily & Houdini

Back in October of 2009 I had to put my 2 year old cat to sleep, because he had a mass in his stomach that was incurable. After about two weeks I was really lonely, and new I needed a new cat to take care of. So my boyfriend and I went into Tails just to look around.

We walked around all the cats, played with a couple, and decided to look at all the dogs. We had no intention of getting a dog, but sure enough we walked all the way around and the very last dog we looked at was Lily (formerly Lizzie.) We both looked at each other and we both new we had to have her. We took her into a little room and got to play with her, and the next day my boyfriend went and picked her up. She fits right in with us, and is such a good girl. She is super spoiled, sleeps right in between us on the bed even though she has her own bed in front of ours.

Even after we got her I was still lonely for a cat, and I had found one I really wanted he was in the window at petsmart. His name is Houdini. He was only three months when I found him, but I could not afford the kitten fee.

The day he turned six months I went to see if he was still at Petsmart, and when I saw him there I had to bring him home. They told me to introduce the cat slowly to Lily, but when I got home I brought the carrier upstairs and Lily just sat and waited till I opened it up. I let Houdini take his time, but he struted right out and both of them looked at each other and Houdini walked right up and kissed Lily on the nose.

Lily likes to wrestle and Houdini has never been scared of her, they roll around and fetch things together. Houdini sits and licks Lily's ears and face when they lay down, and they sleep cuddled up at night. Neither one of them needed time to adjust to their new home, they both new that this was where they were suppose to be.

I thought for a whole day about what I wanted to name Houdini, but I realized he was pretty sly and turns
out it is the perfect name for my devilish little cat. He is great though and when I walk through the door they
make my day better. They both jump on the bed, wait for me to set down my purse and they each give me a kiss on the nose. They are both very affectionate and in need of lots of attention. They absolutely love each other and we love them. They both are little balls of energy, but now they have each other to play with and they are very happy!

Quicksilver
Quicksilver’s story:

I was adopted on March 13, 2010. When my mom and dad decided to go to Tails that day, they were just going to look around, they didn’t plan on bringing home a new “kitty kid” that day. They went through all of the rooms and met all of the cats and found a few that they liked, but my room was the last one they visited. When they came in the door I just knew they were the family for me. I came out from my hiding spot and ran over to say hello right away. I just had to show them how much I needed to go home with them. They kept looking, thinking they weren’t ready to bring a cat home that day, but I knew better! Mom kept coming back to my room and I ran to greet her again! I knew they would take me home, they even picked out my new name before we left that night.

Since then, I’ve adjusted to my new life and it feels like I’ve always been a part of my wonderful new family. I love my big sister Biggie, a white and orange 2 year old Siberian mix. She’s pretty cool when she’s not trying to wrestle me to the ground. In the mornings when dad gets out of bed, I jump up and take his spot right away, I love cuddling with mom until she gets up, she says I snore just like dad.  When mom

makes dinner in the kitchen I like to talk to her and tell her how great things smell. I love napping in front of the big patio door when the sun is shining in, I get all warm and toasty. Mom even put a big fuzzy rug down just for me and Biggie. At night when dad sits on the couch with his laptop I like to curl up next to him and watch the mouse.

I’m so glad I got to go to my Furever home that day. I have a wonderful family who loves me very much. I really love my new name, I think it fits me purrrrrrfectly. My new name is Hemi, because mom says my motor is really loud.

Thanks TAILS for giving me a chance to find my furever home.
Love,
Hemi

Bubba
Bubba on vacation!
Back in February we lost our best friend Muddy, a lab/shepard mix we had gotten when he was just 5 weeks old and was with us for 12 1/2 years.  After that experience we vowed that we could not go through that heartbreak again and said "NO MORE DOGS".  I went in to a pretty big depression after he died and every day when I took my daily walk I would see my neighbors (who had recently got dogs because of their relationship with my Muddy) walking their dogs and the dogs would greet me wondering where my friend was. So began my search....for weeks I looked at Tails and also at the local Animal Shelter searching for the one dog that I knew needed me as much as I needed him.
Then about two months after loosing my dog, I found Bubba, the gorgeous Black and Tan Coonhound.  When ever I went to Tails, all the workers would say "Bubba, we love him". And I did too from the first minute I saw his picture on the web site.  So I sent over the family, one by one to meet Bubba and get their opinions and it was very clear that he was meant to be with us.
So in mid March we adopted Bubba and from that day forward we began calling him Bubba the Wonder Dog  because we after we had learned about his history with Tails, being returned three previous times, we could had to wonder why anyone would give back this beautiful loving dog.  Even my husband who emphatically said "NO MORE DOGS" fell in love the first day with him and now they are very close.
Bub has fit in nicely with our whole family, cats and kids, and with the neighborhood dogs as well.  All the dogs in the hood stop at our driveway as they walk by and longingly look for Bubba to be outside to play with. We live on several acres in a wooded subdivision and there is plenty of room for Bub to explore and run and he seems to be so grateful to have the opportunity to have some freedom and get lots of exercise.
Bubba loves to ride in the car and always wants to be with us no matter where we go, so since my husband and I were planning a two week trip to Colorado, Utah and Oregon, we decided to take him.  We have a 40' motorhome, so Bubba is suffering no hardship on this journey and spends his travel time curled up on one of the two couches and often jumps between them to check out the fantastic views out each side.  We are on our fourth day of the trip and I think he is becoming a bit more comfortable with being away from the security of his new home in Illinois and is enjoying the adventure.
I have attached a few pictures of my dear Bub and want to thank you at Tails for taking such good care of him until we were able to find each other.   He is a big spoiled baby and we plan to keep him happy and healthy for a long time.  He has made our family very very happy.

Angel & Riley

Thought I would write with an update on Angel & Riley.  Angel has been with us now for 6 months and is the queen of the manor.  She has fit in so well.  She has made it up to 45 lbs and I don't think she'll get much over that.  We went to the dog park a couple of weeks ago and I can honestly say, I don't think I have ever seen a greyhound run as fast as she does.  We walk everyday like clock work.  Angel & Riley & Malakai ( a new family member) walked in the Adoptahusky Husky Hike.  They had a day filled with fun.  Angel tried bobbin for hotdogs, but didn't want to get her pretty little nose wet.  They all crossed the finish line and received their Husky Medal.  I can't tell you how happy I am to have Angel & Riley.  They love playing together.  When we first got Riley, Angel mothered him but now that he's bigger than her, they play quite a bit..sometimes very roughly.  I am sending photo's to show how well they are doing.  Thanks for giving me the opportunity to acquire two great dogs.

Betty & Emmaline
September 2008 to September 2009 was not a good time for me. Between September and June I lost 3 of my cats; in July I was diagnosed with a tumor inside my eye; and while I was recovering from radiation therapy at home in September my last 2 cats died.
I had said I wasn't going to have any more pets, but after over 50 years living with cats or dogs it really felt lonesome without a pet. I found Tails through the Petfinder website. I was thinking of adopting some older cats and there were several on Tails' website that I liked. On April 27th I went to look at the cats.
When I went into the first cat room, Emmaline ran right up to me to be petted. Betty hung back a little, and Fluffy, another cat I liked, wouldn't come near me. I went to look at cats in other rooms, but came back for another look at Emmaline and Betty. They came home with me that day.
Betty settled in right away. She follows me around the house and always wants to play. Emmaline is more cautious of new things and people in general, but after 3 weeks she is becoming more comfortable in her new home. They both love to play with cat toys, and spend hours chasing each other. I never adopted from a shelter before, but Tails made it very easy to do.
Thank you to Tails for taking care of both cats, and especially to Emmaline's foster mama Sue for turning a frightened homeless cat into a loving pet.

Abby
We adopted Ruby now known as Abby from TAILS on April 26. She has adapted wonderfully to her new home. She is a very funny dog. She enjoys long walks and has fun with my 16 year old daughter Gwen. She fits in so well with our family and everyone just loves her. I am so happy that we found her. Gwen picked up Abby's favorite squeaky stuffed animal to play with her, but Abby thought she was going to play with it so she ran into the bedroom and grabbed Gwen's stuffed lion and ran with it. She makes us laugh on a daily basis.
I took Abby for a walk today and we went by two big dogs, a Husky and a big bull dog, that were tied to a tree. They were barking this big dog bark and my little 2 1/2 month old puppy stops, sits on the sidewalk, wags her tail and just watches them. She didn't bark or anything (but I think I heard her laughing at them). She refused to move and just wanted to sit and watch the dogs. A little boy about 3 lives in the house and he rides his trike everyday. He must not be allowed to leave the front of his house because he rides by everyday and says, "Hi Abby," and then turns around and says, "Hi Abby." He does this until we are no longer in front of his house.
Abby has brought such joy to our family. Thank you for helping us find this wonderful addition to our family.

Bud
The BUDster

Bud joined our pack in January 2010… a 10 + year old golden retriever with a grumpy attitude. He was severely obese and his legs could barely support
the weight, complicated by atrophy due to lack of mobility.  Guess I’d be grumpy too. Once 106 pounds, Bud is down to a svelte 75 and loving every
minute of it! He charges across the yard after balls now and is gaining muscle strength every day. He left grumpy at 90 pounds.

Bud had to adjust to living among a large pack and get use to the crazy cat but he has become the perfect companion to Toby my 8 year old Golden
who also suffered from obesity. When adopted, Toby was a whopping 153 pounds and is now down to an ideal 103 pounds… yes he is an unusually tall
and large Golden. So, why can’t this weight loss thing work so easily for me??

Bud’s coat has finally grown in and he now looks like a regal old Golden should! Everyone loves Bud; he is just the sweetest old guy.
Thank you Tails for giving Bud a second chance to live his sunset years to the fullest.

Jethro

My name is Jethro and I am a Treeing Walker Coon Hound. I moved into my forever home in December 2009 and have been loving every minute of it! I have gained ten pounds since I left and my coat has never been shinier! I am happy and healthy because I live in balanced home where my food and exercise is very important to my owners.

In the beginning, there were a lot of rules for me. During the day when the hairy one and small one were at work, I was only allowed in the kitchen. And at night, I had to sleep in my dog bed on the floor next to the human bed. After a month of strict rules, my owners and I started to trust each other and now life is pretty easy; I roam the house as I like and sleep on their bed!

My owners have me on a routine of exercise, discipline, lots of play time and affection. Sam, the tall, hairy one, walks me every morning for 45 minutes. We usually chase rabbits and run through wooded areas.

After our morning play time, I get to eat high quality dog food: 42% protein! It is grain free which make my coat soft and silky. This food is the exact kind of food I would pick if I were in the wild, grocery shopping for myself! When breakfast is done, the hairy man I call Sam does training games with me and brushes my teeth so I don’t have doggie breath.

He then leaves and I spend most of the morning laying on the couch or looking out the windows. My favorite thing to do before the sun comes out is to make a dog nest with the pillows. I burrow myself in and get comfortable. Once the sun is out, I go to my favorite room and lay where the sun casts a shadow on the bed. I spend 7 hours a day relaxing in the sun.

I know it is time to quit being lazy and to start my afternoon fun when I hear the garage open; this is when the small blonde one gets home. Dixie and I take an hour long afternoon stroll and play lots of training games that involve treats. She and I go to new walking spots everyday: park districts, new subdivisions, pet stores, and the vet. I like walking with the small blonde one because I get to take a lot of car rides. We go to pet stores a couple times a week, and I get to meet new doggie friends all the time! I also meet new dog friends at level 3 obedience class. Class is fun and it is quite a mental and physical workout – for me and my owners!

Once our afternoon exercise time is over, we head home so I can eat my delicious, healthy dog food. I especially love dinner with the hairy one and the small one because they combine my healthy dog food with vegetables, brown rice, blue berries, healthy cheeses, and other yummy treats.

After we are all done with dinner, we usually cuddle together on the couch. I fall asleep for awhile, and then they wake me up and we all go into the bedroom together, where I usually make a good attempt to sleep right in between them.

My forever owners have made my home a happy and healthy place. They love me dearly, and I love them! I know they love me because they tell me all the time. They sing me songs and tell me funny jokes every day! I am so glad they decided to donate their newspapers to TAILS that one December night; it has been the best thing that has ever happened to the three of us!

Our plan is to find a new hound to join our pack. A little sister will be perfect in our home; she will know that I am in charge and look up to me, and she will be a friendly, loyal playmate –just like Ellie Mae, my sister whom I was separated from when I was adopted from TAILS. I hope Ellie Mae and I can play together one day…if you are her owner, please call TAILS and they will call my owners so we can have a pack play date soon!

Love,
Jethro

Kaoru

Video-Kisses for Kaoru and Daddy!~ Or, A New Kitty In The House~

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLD5VQPLC44

This past week I have been busy with Kaoru.
Last Tuesday morning I was talking on the phone and surfing the internet, while checking hundreds of emails.  When I decided to pull up the Tails web site, which is the Pet rescue place where we adopted Sanosuke in February of this year.
I had sent Tails a copy and link to my Blog story about Sanosuke,  the one where I wrote about his adoption.  Soon after that Blog posting, Sano’s litter mates were adopted and their pictures disappeared off the adoption site.  So when I pulled up their site I was very surprised to see a kitten that looked like one of Sano’s sisters. Her name was Hershey.
I was curious about her history.  Why was she still there? Was she brought back?  Maybe I was wrong!  Cats look very similar, right?
I pulled out Sanosuke’s file and compared the litter numbers; they matched except for the last two digits. Which made sense each kitten would have their own number.
Biting my nails I clicked off the site and went about to reading emails.
Then my curiosity got to me and I called Tails and asked if any of Sanosuke’s litter mates where still there. I gave my phone number to the woman and was told I would get a call back.
Within thirty minutes Tails called back. I was told; one of Sano’s sisters had never been adopted. When the other kittens were adopted they moved her out of the cage into the cat room.  It wasn’t a good place for her. She was placed in a room that was being closed off due to a fungal infection.
Ooops!
I was told she was never ill. She never had an infection! Yet, she had to go through the incubation period of nearly two months while she got dipped; physically held down under water with only her eyes and mouth showing. The process can make a cat crazy and this kitten was in a room with a lot of other cats that needed help. They only had two wonderful people to take care of them physically and mentally. Hershey wasn’t given the attention she needed.  So her mental health was set to the side while they dealt with other cats, seemly, more stressed than her.
I felt claustrophobic just hearing about it.
Now if you had read my original story on Sanosuke, you would know that he and his litter mates had very little human contact, besides getting medical care and being fed.  We were warned he was nearly feral.
Now, here I was hearing that she may never be just right, ‘and’ she will need a lot of one-on-one care. ‘And’ she wasn’t very social. ‘And’ she would freak when someone came near her. I thanked the woman for calling me back and hung up.
Then I hunted down Michael and told him the story.
Michael asked what I was going to do. One more kitten would be an expense. But then again cats are very clean and social animals. But this one may be broken.  Then he walked away from me…
It took me ten minutes of thinking.
The cats I had for years were from a mama kitty. She was my daughter’s first animal rescue.  My daughter was ten years old at that time.  I had been very surprised when that little cat gave birth, in the closet, within a month of coming into the house.  Her kittens never left my life. The last one, Sandy died at eighteen while I  held her.
I grabbed my keys and headed for the car. Michael laughed and called out the door. “Don’t come back without her!”
When I entered Tails, the receptionist looked up and smiled and asked me if, I was there to adopt Hershey?
Laughing I asked, how she knew? She told me Michael had already called and informed them I was coming for her.
I filled out some paperwork while she located someone to help me.
A wonderfully patient volunteer took me in a room to talk. “When you saw, Hershey how did you get along with her? Was she friendly?”
I had to be honest; I haven’t seen her since we adopted Sanosuke and I told her so. I did ask, if Hershey was the kitten that had been staring at me though the glass wall?  She had spotted me when I walked in and we had ‘a moment’ through the glass. I cooed. And she stared.
I was told that was her.
Then, I explained that I was taking, Hershey home to her brother.
The woman looked at me quietly and said. “He may not remember her.”
“He will!” I said with a smile. “I have fed and observed feral cats for years. They know a family member when they are reunited.”
I don’t think she believed me…
She was trying to stop me from being disappointed.
When I said, “They just need to be shown to each other gently and with love.”
The interview was over and I finished signing the papers.
Hershey was placed in a room for me to observe her, and allowing me time to change my mind. I was warned not to enter the room.  I was told; she would freak due to her history and lack of human contact, and may hurt me or herself.  I needed to wait before I entered the room. She had just clawed the technician who brought her to me
I waited a few minutes for the kitten to move away from the door. Then I entered the room.
I sat on the chair and waited.
She hid behind a chair and stared.
She had a look in her eyes similar to the animals on the commercials that have been abused.  So sad and scared!  I started talking telling her about her brother. She wasn’t listening to me at all.
Cats need to form a bond with humans in order to see them. Otherwise they have eyes only for other cats. Here she was, stuck in a room with a human.  And the only other people she knew would grab her and give her medicine and didn’t have time to play.
Carefully I moved the chair she was hiding behind and picked her up. She was stiff and extremely frighten. I started to rock her like a baby, and then she leaned against me without relaxing.
During this time I could hear the sound of the puppies and dogs from the doggie area. I wanted to go see them, but not today.
So many animals calling out for someone to love!
When I brought her home, Michael grabbed the carrier from the care and carefully set it down in the living room.
Tomoe hissed and hid.
                                  Kenshin glared and hid.
PJ walked up and said, hello.  When she hissed at him, PJ looked like his feelings were hurt.
                                                                              Then
                                                                                    Sanosuke, slowly
                                                                                                            walked up
                                                                                                                          to the carrier.
They touched noses, and made happy sounds. She reached through the bars and gentle touched Sano’s head. He rubbed against the cage as she cried loudly from inside. Sanosuke sat and watched, as we set her up in a cage in the living room. He never stopped taking to her!
They remembered each other and both are very happy. We changed her name to Kaoru…
Helping an animal doesn’t mean you have to adopt. You could volunteer, or donate money, or cat and dog crates, or baby blankets or new toys.
If everyone can save just one animal, just one..   Just think how wonderful that would be!

Ernie & Gracie
As soon as the frisbee comes from the top the fridge, they "share" it until we are in the yard, where they promptly return to their regular m.o., Ernie retrieving, Gracie running perimeter circles..."let's go home"=back to both of them carrying it inside...
Just a quick note.  Ernie and Gracie are loving spring, frisbee and walks much better when it's warm (at least for us!).  Wanted TAILS to know they are doing great, and may be two of the best dogs we've known!  We love, love, love them!!!
Thanks again,
Nancy

 Sabrina & Samantha
Kitty Cuddles: Sabrina, right, Samantha, left
Below: Sabrina, right, Samantha, left on their first full day at home
When my mom and I went to Tails last month we had every intention of adopting a cat, and giving it a forever home. Imagine our surprise when we adopted 2! When we met Sabrina (formerly Cherry) and Samantha (formerly Ava) and saw the way that they interacted with each other and us we knew that we would be taking both of them. There was no way that we could separate them, and it was the best decision we could have made.
They are so playful and loving, and mischievous. While they are still a little skittish, they are getting much better, Sabrina loves to talk, even when she's asleep, if you get near her she will talk to you. Samantha doesn't like to be picked up, but she loves to snuggle and will curl up right next to you in bed. They love to play with all of their toys (and they have a lot to choose from), and with each other. Every morning we can hear them running through the house. With lots of windows, there is always a sunny spot on the floor to lay in, or an open window to sit in to watch all the birds and squirrels. Where one is, the other is usually there too.
Thank you so much for helping us find our cats. They are in their forever home and we couldn't be happier.
Sincerely,
Martha DeLancey and Carol Lemay

Maggie Mae

Greetings from Maggie Mae (formerly Kerry),

I know that it’s been a while since I’ve written, but Mom and Dan don’t always allow me access to the computer (shhhhh, they left the computer on today).

Things are great here in Romeoville.  I have people who really love me, and I love them back.  They keep calling me things like Precious and Cutie Pie even though my tag says my name is Maggie.  I have a big sister, Molly the black and tan Coon Hound, and we love to play toys.  Molly isn’t always very interested, but if I shove a toy in her face long enough, she’ll play with me.  Sometimes Molly gets so excited when we play together that she starts running around the house as fast as she can, all 70 pounds of her – it’s pretty funny.   Max, the large cat that lives here has even adjusted to me and finally quit hissing at me; he says it was nothing personal.

I have friends that come over to play.  Allie and Lillie the ferocious looking, but whimpy Pit-Bulls and their sister Luci, a Shiba Inu.  Allie and Lillie really like to play toys with me when they come over, we have oodles of fun!   Luci just tells everyone what to do.  Luci’s Mom says it’s something called Napolean syndrome.

Molly and I go for walks with Mom pretty regularly.  I have a pretty red coat for cold days and a yellow slicker for rainy days.  I have a big yard to play in, lots of rabbits that forget which side of the fence they should be on, and a nice neighbor next door, Toby.  Toby the Weimaraner, always comes to the fence to say hello when I’m outside.  Good food, good friends, treats and a huge basket of toys make life wonderful.

Mom’s been working at controlling my weight, and although I’m still a bit pudgy, I’ve managed to hold my weight steady since last fall.  Mom weighs me regularly to keep an eye on things – all these weigh-ins makes me feel like a contestant on the puppy version of the Biggest Loser!   I’ve included some pictures Mom took of me today so that you can see how well I’m doing.

I keep looking at all the pictures of the dogs  available for adoption at TAILS and know they will all find a nice home, just like I did.  Thanks again to everyone at TAILS for taking such good care of me last fall while I was there.

Your friend,

Maggie Mae Chapman

Ling Ling
Laurel at TAILS          but          Ling Ling at home
I adopted Laurel (now known as Ling Ling) from TAILS in March 2010.  Throughout the last few months, I had visited TAILS a lot, but Ling Ling was always quiet and kept to himself.  People were saying that he looked grumpy but I think he was just nervous.  He's a very shy little guy, but he's grown comfortable since I've brought him to his forever home.  He likes us to know that he's around by meowing all the time, he's a very conversational kittie.  I've never heard a cat purr as loudly as him and he really loves when his neck is rubbed.  He won't play with toys, but he has a habit of licking tags on beds or chairs.. It's really strange, but kind of cute.
I'm really glad that I adopted him, and would like to thank TAILS for the excellent care they take of their animals.
Thanks!

Patience
Patience and I wanted to thank you for helping us find each other.  I had been thinking about adopting a dog for quite some time and in the meantime Patience waited for me patiently at Tails for almost a year.  They say that I rescued her but the truth is she rescued me.  She did need some help figuring things out when she first moved in but since then we have been so happy together for over a year and a half.  We love our mile long walks, jumping and playing in the snow and her all time favorite is playing tug of war.  As you can see in the picture we sometimes have to fight over who's taking more space in the bed but she loves me too much to disappoint me.  She has taught me to love in a way that I never knew how, she loves me unconditionally. I learn from her daily to be reminded of how patient she is with me and how much others have been patient with me in my life.  People assume I named her Patience because it requires me to be patient with her, but I have to help them understand that it is to help me be reminded of how patient she is with me as I learn how to love unconditionally.

Thank you so much Tails for giving me this incredible opportunity to have adopted her, we are truly greatful for all you have done and all you do.

Sanosuke

Sano became a family member right from the moment we held him. He follows my husband around and searches for him when he wakes up.

Our other cats, Kenshin and Tomoe, were also rescue cats from TAILS. My husband Michael who is disabled and has seizures calls his kitties his best friends.  Tomoe and Kenshin will take turns sitting with Michael for hours when he isn’t doing well. Sano, who has only been with us a short time, has already joined in on the job of watching over Michael. The cats watch Television with Michael, watch him play video games and sit with him when he reads. Each of the cats has their own game they play with Michael. Tomoe plays a game called Bean-Bean (Tomoe calls it Meow-Meow) where she leaps, flips and swats at beans tossed over her head. (Soon to be a video, Tomoe is camera shy)  Kenshin plays tag. He chases Michael and when he catches him then Michael has to chase Kenshin. Kenshin also loves to play with snowballs sliding down the hallway, like a hockey player. Sano plays fetch with toy mice, actually returning the mouse to Michael’s hands to be thrown again.

This rescue story was posted to my Blog;   (Terrific story about how Sano chose the family!)

A video of our sweet new Kitty was posted showing him playing with a toy. You can see that video here, at my Blog: http://gerardinebaugh.wordpress.com/2010/02/17/sanosuke-and-his-big-pink-mouse/

Shadow
Hello, from Emily and Nick! We are the adoptive parents of Keenan (now known as Shadow) the black cat and we wanted everyone at Tails to know how much we love him! He is a perfect cat for us, and for our first cat, Freya, who we wanted a friend for. Freya's days of chasing air are over, now that she has Shadow to pounce upon. He is more a lover than a fighter, so he doesn't always appreciate the pouncing, but he is always up to playing hide and seek with her and a good, crinkly bag. In his picture, you can see him about to press his face up on the camera to get a nice rubbing. His favorite napping spot is wherever Momma is - on the computer desk, under the computer chair, or on her lap. He is the first cat that I have been able to keep in the room all night and not wake me up at about midnight, biting my ear or eating my hair. He is also one of the first that sticks to the scratching post! Anyway, we are very thankful for him and for all the good care we know he received at Tails!

Okami & Auron
Auron, left, and Okami, right This is them in their favorite spot in front of a huge window in the back of our house. They love lying in the sun and watching the birds fly by there.
Hey there, Mike here!

I adopted Vincent (I renamed him to Okami) and Bessie (renamed her to Auron.) I just wanted to share my story, particularly with Auron, because that one is kinda special.

My girlfriend Candy first brought me to Tails, because she's one of the volunteers there. I followed her one day, being the animal lover that I am. She was more into dogs, just because they're more fun and she was allergic to cats, but I was drawn to all the different cats. One in particular caught my eye (no pun intended) and that was Bessie. You see, I share a common handicap with her, I'm also blind in one eye, although you'd never tell unless I told you. So I felt sympathetic towards her. She also often seemed depressed and was bullied by some of the other cats in that room. She actually switched rooms a few times while I was visiting. Other than that, she was a sweetheart, and I instantly fell head over heels for her. I remembered a piece of advice that my mother, who had owned 5 cats when I was born, had told me. "Never get a lonely cat. When you get one, you have to get them a friend."

So my quest for a friend for Bessie began. I found several cats that I liked, I loved ones that had lots of energy. I must have been a good luck charm to those cats, because all of the ones I was interested in were adopted just days after I became interested in them. So I took a new approach to finding a friend, finding a cat that Bessie liked, and not one that only I liked. After a week I noticed that she and Vincent got along, and had the occasional wrestling match. Vincent was just the cat I was looking for too. Now that I picked a pair of felines, I just had two things in my way.

One, was my mother. Although she had a history with cats, and loved cats, she did not want more animals in the house because she thought that she would be doomed to be the sole caretaker for them. So I brought her and my younger sister, MacKenzie, to Tails one day to meet the cats. They both instantly loved Vincent, but I was more worried about Bessie. That was when something was odd. Bessie was being the most active I had ever seen her. She usually just slept in the corner all day, and didn't really do anything and never seemed to move. This time, she was running around, playing with my sister, and she had come out of her shell! I was overjoyed! I adopted them the next day. Now only one hurdle.

I had to get approval from my senior black lab, Shadow. After keeping the new additions to the family locked in my sisters room for a few days to adjust to the house setting, I put them in a carrier, and placed it in front of Shadow. She didn't bark, she didn't scare them, she didn't even give it a second thought. I decided to let the cats out, and they actually kept their distance for a while until they got okay around each other. It all went smoothly.

Okami and Auron have been enjoying every minute since I brought them home. Whether it be playing "Ninja tag," or watching the birds out the window, or even chasing Shadow around the house, these cats have found a comfortable spot in a loving home, and all of us couldn't be happier!

Molly
Hi...this is Becki,  but my new family calls me Molly.  I wanted to thank you and everyone at TAILS for taking care of me and finding me a new home.  I really like it here.  When my new family came to get me I wasn't sure what it would be like.  They took me to PETCO and bought me a new pink harness and matching leash.  They also got me pink fleece hoody with hearts on it that keeps me warm until I grow all my fur back.  And I got a raincoat that I haven't gotten to wear yet.  My new mom was going to get me a coat,  but they didn't have my size in stock.  She found me lots of cute outfits on a website,  but they are out of stock so when they get them they said they would let her know.
It's so nice here.  I lay on the souch nest to my mom or the big girl a lot.  The other two,  small girl and boy,  like to pet me too.  Sometimes they get a little smothering, but I still like the attention.  They really love me here.  They always tell me how cute I am.
My new dad likes me too.  I heard my mom say she wasn't sure whether he would really pay much attention to me because he likes big dogs and I'm so little.  He fed me as soon as I got to my new house and he takes me out of my crate every morning and takes me to the back yard to potty.  Today he picked me up so I didn't have to walk on the snow and he set me on the grass.  I think he really likes me too.
I got a bath and my mom used the blow dryer on my fur.  I was kind of afraid,  but she talked to me and pet me and it was so warm.  She set in on the not noisy setting and after awhile I liked it.  Thank you again for finding me my new forever family!  Molly
Hi ...it's me Amy Jao,  Molly's new mom.  Just wanted to let everyone know she's had a great weekend.  She has only had two little accidents and they were because we didn't get her lazy bones off the couch to get her outside soon enough.  She got brushed and took a bath when we got her home.  She loves to get brushed.
I thought she would be kind of a spaz from how she acted at TAILS.  If I didn't know better I would think you switched dogs on us!  She only gets up off the couch to go outside or get food or water.  She does follow me around the house and likes to go for rides in the car. She also stands on her hind legs for treats and spins around!  We're working on sit and stay.  She's seems very bright.  She answers to her name and goes right to her crate without a second thought.
She is an absolute delight to have and we love her even more than we could've imagined.  I can't imagine who would've let her into the situation she came from,  but their actions are certainly our gain!  She is a treasure!
Thank you so much for taking her in and making it possible for us to be her forever family!

Maggie
We adopted Inky yesterday, and changed her name to Maggie. She met her older dog sister late last night, and it was a little tense at first, but Abby soon ignored Maggie. She slept in her crate all night long, no accidents either! Today, Maggie has learned the joy of napping on the leather sofa, and her and Abby had some excellent play time outside together.

Maggie is such a good dog! She already knows "Outside" and will play fetch with us. I think she is going to a breeze to train, and will be a joy to have around. We already love her very, very much!

Jinxx (formerly Spoiled)
Well I just wanted to let you know that I adopted Spoiled the cat. I'm not sure exactly what info you'll need or want to write a TAILS tale, but I definitely want to do one! I know he was at TAILS for a while and I'm sure it was bittersweet to see him go. Originally I was looking for a cat for my boyfriend (I've been deathly allergic to cats for as long as I can remember) I found a great cat for him but sadly, Tux got adopted, and I suddenly realized something...I WASN'T HAVING AN ALLERGIC REACTION!!! Before, I couldn't even wash empty kitty litter pans, and now I can snuggle with kitties with minimal reaction. I wasn't really looking for a cat for myself, still just for my boyfriend.
I happened upon a few kitties I really liked (Bessie, Spoiled, Draven, Tux, Dixie) while most of them got adopted only 2 remained, Spoiled and Bessie. Both of them were pretty shy at first, but Spoiled started blossoming and would jump down from his little safe corner and lavish me with attention, he would even jump up on my lap! Before I could barely get him to inch closer so I could pet him. I just kept visiting him and kept falling more and more in love with him. There were some bullies in his room that picked on him and he just walked away. The fact that he was older, and that not many people would want him made me just want him more. I'm just a sucker for seniors!
After getting the ok to adopt a cat, there was just one thing left...the seal of approval of my blind 16 year old toy poodle, Poxy. Planning a meet n greet with Sam, I could only hope for the best. Jinxx was very stressed out about being taken from his room and put in one of the visiting rooms alone (I've learned he doesn't like to be alone) Jinxx and Poxy approached each other and....Jinxx just started rubbing on Pox! Poxy was a little confused and just walked away. There was no fight, so I adopted him as soon as I could! He's only been with me a few days and I already adore him! I'm expecting Jinxx and Poxy to be the second Milo and Otis! I can keep updating you and send you pictures of them once he gets used to the house :)

Mira

Dear Verna and everyone at Tails!

I just wanted to let you know....I'm okay!

I rested most of the way to my adoptive parents home Saturday night.  It was dark when we got there so I really couldn't see where I was.  Shadow, my new older sister came out to see me but I wasn't sure about her as I didn't know her.  She just walked around and almost ignored me so I barked at her a little, but Mom said not to do that as it might scare her.   When we went inside Mom took me around on the leash to show me my new home.  We walked around the living room, into the bedroom, into the dining room and into the kitchen, twice.  Dad had Shadow on a leash and Mom still had me on a leash and they gradually let me closer to Shadow.  I still was a little afraid of her so I growled ever so slightly but Mom said everything was okay and told me not to do that.  Soon, Dad let Shadow go, cause it was her house and she still  kind of ignored me.  Mom encouraged me to get a little closer and I again growled every so slightly.  Mom again reassured me that I didn't need to do that.  Within 2 hours Mom got me to realize that Shadow was no threat to me and that she was actually a little afraid of me too.  Guess my growling did kind of do that to her.  I'm sorry for that as Shadow is really nice.  Mom let me off my leash too and by bedtime I was free to roam although I was pretty happy just to stay by her or Dad.  Mom, Dad and Grandpa were discussing a new name for me.  Mom kind of wanted to name me Annie.  Mom's, son, brother's and grandkids were texting her with their choice in names too.  Grandpa decided that my name should be Miracle, but call me "Mira".  Mom did want kind of a different name so she decided since Grandpa was going to be 96 soon and HE was the one that actually paid for me that it would be nice if he got to name me.  So, that was it, my name is Mira....I kind of like it!

By bedtime, Dad took me into the bedroom and showed me where I where my bed was.  (I didn't have to sleep in a cage!)  It's over on Dad's side of the bed as Shadow already had her bed on Mom's side.  The bed was so comfortable that I slept until a little after 4:00 a.m. when Mom heard me walking around in the bedroom.  Dad got up and let me out, it was very cold so it didn't take me long to get out and back again.  Dad walked me back to the bedroom and reminded me where my bed was and I was happy to lay back down for a couple more hours.  Then we all got up, I got to eat some more and I got to roam the house all I wanted.  It's a big place!

I had to go out again and so Mom let me out.  She walked me down and around the fenced in yard so I would know just how far I could go.  I stayed very close to her and was very good.  It was a very big yard!

Sunday, Mom and Dad went away for awhile, Grandpa stayed home with me.  He's very nice too.  He let me sleep on his lap in the lounge chair for about 3 hours while he watch ball games on TV.  Mom and Dad came home, I knew they would, and they petted me and hugged me a lot and told me how they missed me.  They always make sure to pet Shadow too so she doesn't feel left out.  The day went well and I even kissed Shadow several times.  I was sorry I growled at her yesterday as she really is nice.  When bedtime came, I knew where to go.  I slept on my bed until about 2:00 in the morning when Mom let me outside again.  I was still tired so she and I went back to the bedroom to finish off the night.

Today, Dad and I went out back as he wanted to play.  He and I first walked the fence again like I had with Mom the day before.  Dad was so pleased that I stopped when he did and sat waiting for him to start again.  He sat me down in the yard, told me to stay and then backed away from me.  I did just as he said and then he called me to come.  He was so pleased with me.  He then found a golf ball to play with.  Mom said it was too small so she found a larger big pink "super" ball for us to play with next time.  It was perfect.

My new home is working out very nicely.  Thank you for letting me go with these nice people even though I hadn't met Shadow.  I think some day when the snow is gone she might even like me enough to play with me even though she is 14.

Dad's really nice, he lets me on the couch to snuggle with him.  We are watching TV.

I'm learning which bowls are mine as I have a new older sister and she has her food and water place across the room from mine!

This is my new older sister, Shadow.  I'm going to be really nice to here as you should do that and always respect your elders.

P.S.  Verna, Mom had not received the e-mail from the 24 Pet Watch and so she looked over the sheet again and realized that there was another incorrect entry to her e-mail address.  The number should read 4762 not 4962.  Thanks!

Love ya, Mom, Mellie, Mel, Sis, and Aunt Mel

Jack & Lenny
 Prince Lenny, left

The two Japanese chins, Jack (formerly known as Jackie Chin) and Lenny (Bruce Wee),which were rescued from the animal hoarding case are enjoying a wonderful life with their new family.    They were tenderly cared for by Tails employees and further nursed back to health by my dear friend, Jodi Scaletta who sadly passed away.  Jodi was a wonderful person who had a deep love for all animals.  She quickly became involved with the rescue efforts and provided a foster home for Jack and Lenny.  One day Jodi asked me at work if I would be interested in caring for two really special and loving dogs.  They were kept in a cage together and had endured terrible conditions and could not be separated after all they had been through in their short lives.  Jack and Lenny are very healthy and stay active living with their owners, Linda and her two chlldren, Kane and Kayla (9 and 7 years old).  They can be seen walking all around town and  especially love going to Hopkins Park and listening to the outdoor concerts in the summertime.   Jack and Lenny have been a wonderful addition to our family and they are loved dearly and love in return.
Sincerely,
Linda Yates

Sammie
Sammie came to Tails a 2 year old momma dog with her pups from a another shelter far away in December 2009. I am a volunteer walker at Tails and have had my share of heart strings pulled with each and every dog I walk. I always come home to tell my husband what a wonderful group of dogs I got to walk that day. Sammie got me but good when she looked at me with those brown sad eyes. She has the sweetest disposition and was a very good momma dog. She came to share our home with us January 9th 2010 and she just loves it here with her new family of 2 cats and a loving Mom and Dad that all adore her. We couldn't be happier it is the a perfect fit!

Thank You Tails for saving her for us!

Trixie
In 2008 I found Trixie at TAILS as we were picking out a kitten to bring home. We needed a companion for Kyra, the kitten that picked my husband to be her forever friend. I looked at all the cats in the shelter, wanting to find the perfect one. In the big cat room in a basket, in front of a sunny window, I saw a pretty little girl cat. I looked at her and she looked at me and then she turned over onto her other side to show me she was missing her hind leg. It was almost as if she was used to doing this, knowing this is what prospective owners would like to see. At first I was startled and thought that I wouldn’t know what to do with a cat missing a limb. But then I decided, what else could I do, but love her like I would love any other cat. We put her with Kyra to see if they were a good match together and they seemed to get along fine.

Trixie, who was named Shamrock at the shelter, had been there for 6 months! Someone had found her wondering outside and brought her to the shelter.  The volunteers at TAILS don’t know if she was born without the leg or if she lost it sometime in the year and a half that she’d been alive. She seemed like a normal cat so we adopted both cats and brought them home.

About a week or two after we got her home we found out she wasn’t exactly "normal". She has a nervous tick - a head bobble that is very noticeable when she eats and is also more prevalent when she is upset. She doesn’t like it when you walk up to her quickly, and doesn't let us pick her up. She has chronic colitis and goes outside her pan frequently. Her walking seems laborious, but she runs and jumps like a gazelle. She doesn't take too many chances. She stays out of window sills and high places.  We often wonder what happened to her and suspect that she lost her leg very tragically.

She is such doll, I don’t understand how anyone could harm her or let her sit in the shelter for such a long time. She is so dainty and acts just like a little lady! So precious and sweet. She has a tiny pathetic meow that gets her anything she wants and a beautiful two-toned purr. We adore her and have no doubt that she is a perfect cat.

Kyra was a little tom boy, but recently has grown into quite the little beauty, so slender and sleek.

A Family Reunion

Watson                                  Rayden
In November 12, 2009 a very special family reunion took place. The “family” part – two brothers;  a pair of large husky-bloodhound mixed breed dogs rescued from the 2007 Rochelle Hoarding Rescue. The “special” part” -  when rescued, both brothers were unsocialized with people. One was fostered and rehabilitated within a few months, the other proved more challenging and was sent to Tara’s Babies Animal Sanctuary in AZ in early 2008 along with 6 other unsocialized dogs to further their rehabilitation. Tara’s spent two years working with the dog and several other siblings and family members.

The brothers spent their first few years living together along with three other siblings in small outdoor enclosures at the hoarder’s farm (left). With little human contact, they became feral. Once rescued by TAILS, all of the dogs were separated as they moved into foster homes and the two brothers had not seen each other since that fateful day over two years ago.

Brother Watson has lived with me for over two years and is a dearly beloved sidekick, 105#s of love and companionship…. A real dog now in contrast to the terrified growling bundle of fear I first met in Oct 2007. Brother Rayden (formerly Beau Beau whose name was inadvertently switched with another brother upon receipt at Taras) was sent along with six other dogs to AZ for rehabilitation. Two years later he was walking on leash and responding well to people as his pack leader, but still very timid and reluctant to be touched.

But on November 12th after Rayden earned his frequent flyer miles, the two brothers were reunited once again and it quickly became clear that despite the time lapse, the two recognized each other immediately. Watson’s smile was so huge and bright, you’d have thought he won the lottery. His whole body wiggled with excitement when his brother arrived.

In the six weeks since his arrival, Watson and Rayden have become best buddies and playmates, charging after each other through the yard, lounging in the warm house, and living the high life…. Together again!

Rayden made the transition without a fuss and has been an absolute joy to have as part of our family…… and who knows, maybe another sibling will earn his miles in 2010, will just have to wait and see.
