Dog’s Day Out: Home for the Howlidays

Oh there’s no place like Home for the Howlidays! No plans this Thanksgiving? Why not give a Tails shelter dog something to be grateful for! We are excited to announce our “Dog’s Day Out: Home for the Howlidays” program is back! Sleepovers give the homeless dogs in our care a much needed break from the shelter and a chance to spend a few fun filled days and cozy nights with you! That’s right! We will match you with one of our adult shelter dogs for a fun filled Thanksgiving sleepover from Tuesday, November 26th or Wednesday, November 27th and bring them back anywhere between Sunday, December 1st or Monday, December 2nd! YES! You read that right! This time, you can foster a pet for just Thanksgiving and Thanksgiving weekend!

How it works: It’s easy! Just come to Tails Humane Society during our pickup days and talk to a staff member! Our shelter team will great you and have you fill out a survey. Once we review your survey, answer any questions you may have we will match you with a few of our available adult dogs. After you find the perfect pup, we will go over the sleepover process and any other information you will need to know. You’ll also receive their personalized sleepover information packet, a phone number to call our Foster Coordinator for 24hr support and all of the supplies that they will need for your sleepover. (Yes, food and treats are included too!) Finally, you can return your sleepover guest pup Sunday, December 1st or Monday, December 2nd.

Sleepover Pickup: Tuesday, November 26th or Wednesday, November 27th

Sleepover Drop-Off/Return: Sunday, December 1st or Monday, December 2nd.

Home for the Howlidays Sleepover FAQ

What should I bring to the shelter? Please bring a valid form of ID and if you rent, a current copy of your lease.

Can I participate if I have other animals or children in the home? Yes! We will do our best to find you a perfect match!* When you come to the shelter for pick-up night, we will ask you about your home’s residents and any pets you own. Your resident pet MUST be spayed or neutered in order to bring a dog home for the holidays or to participate in our traditional foster program.

*Please note: Sleepover approved dogs will go home on a first come, first served basis. We may not have a match for everyone at this time.

Can I bring my Howliday Sleepover dog to a friend or family’s gathering? What if I am having a large gathering? In most cases, we don’t recommend this. Much like when you first adopt a pet, we suggest keeping new people and places to a minimum as it can be stressful and often scary for the dog. Take this opportunity to let your pup relax, soak in the love and have a great break from the shelter!

Won’t this sleepover upset the dogs? Actually, studies show that short term sleepovers and breaks from the shelter actually benefit shelter dogs! Read all about it here.

Does it cost anything to participate? Only your time and your love! There is no fee to participate and your foster guest will be sent home with everything they need!

What if I have a question or need help during the sleepover? We are here for you! Before you leave the shelter, you will be given our Foster Coordinators contact information.

What if it doesn’t work out? Can I bring the dog back? Absolutely. If for any reason you want to end the sleepover, you can contact the Foster Coordinator at the number provided in your packet and we will arrange for you to bring the dog back to Tails.

What if I fall in love and want to adopt my foster? We love happy endings! Just let the Foster Coordinator know you would like to adopt and we will arrange to have all of the paperwork ready for your return appointment.

Can I take a cat home for a sleepover? No. Unfortunately, most cats tend to get very stressed out when moving between new environments. For their health and safety, we are not able to include them in this program. However, if you’re interested in fostering cats through our Foster Program we’d love to have you!
