Lost Pet Protocol
- Stay calm. It is important to think clearly.
- Canvas the area where the pet was lost, call their name and other phrases they know (ex: “treat”).
- Ask your neighbors to keep an eye out.
- Call local animal shelters, police department, and animal control.
- Post on local and statewide sites and social media pages for lost pets.
- Make flyers with a clear photo. Be sure to include: your pet’s name, a description and your contact information. Lost Pet Flyer Generator
- Check parks, dog parks, and other locations your pet may frequent.
- Use social media and ask friends to share your information!
- Refer to the other resources on this page!

Proactive Measures
Microchip your pets!
The American Veterinary Medical Association reports that microchipped stray animals were returned to their owners at more than double the overall rate for all stray animals.
For only $25, you can get your pet microchipped at Tails Humane Society. Appointments are preferred and can be scheduled by emailing info@tailshumanesociety.org or by calling 815-758-2457 ext 102

According to industry statistics, sadly, one in every three pets will go missing in their lifetime. Petco Love Lost is a searchable national database that uses patented facial recognition technology to make finding lost pets quicker and easier. This simple-to-use tool will be easily accessible to participating animal organizations nationwide, as well as any pet parent or person who finds a lost pet. Uploaded photos of a missing dog or cat are immediately scanned to determine whether the lost pet is at a participating shelter or with a neighbor in the community.
We see firsthand how quickly a pet can go missing, whether they were curious, following a scent, wandered through an open gate or became scared during a storm.
